A Dog, A Shadow explores an aspect of life that appears to be a part of the real world but transports us to a different sphere – a mystical one. The author, Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. S. L. Bhyrappa, brings in numerous symbolic elements in his narration, which reveal different layers of meanings. Life after death and rebirth have tormented human civilization from time immemorial. The author dives deep into a group of circumstances where a person claims to have been re- born and recalls incidents from his previous life. The narrative technique seems realistic but the author has tapped numerous über-human dimensions in the work. The novel has captured the imagination of the Kannada readers for over six decades and is appearing for the first time in English translation.
