The Lavender Scare first brought the cold war era purge of homosexuals from the federal government to national prominence.
It has since inspired a novel, a play, and an opera exploring how the gay community of Washington, D.C. experienced McCarthy era homophobia. It was also the basis for the award-winning documentary film "The Lavender Scare" broadcast nationwide on PBS. Narrated by Glenn Close, it was called "A gripping, nimbly assembled documentary" by The Los Angeles Times and "fascinating and horrifying--and timely" by The New York Times.
